Where are the U.S. Virgin Islands?

The History of the U.S. Virgin Islands

The United States Virgin Islands have a very interesting history. The islands were first inhabited by Native Americans. On Christopher Columbus' second trip to the Americas, he stumbled upon the islands that would later be known as the U.S. Virgin Islands. While these islands are known today mostly for their beauty and the outstanding Caribbean house rentals in the area, the history of these islands involves many cultures. In fact, France, Denmark, Spain and other countries have laid claim the islands at different points in history.

The three main islands that make up the U.S. Virgin Islands are St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas. However, those aren't the only three. Many other smaller islands, such as Water Island, make up the U.S. Virgin Islands. While many people from around the world visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, the local population is just around 100,000.

With over two million people flocking to the U.S. Virgin Islands on a yearly basis, tourism is a huge business. When visiting the Caribbean, stay at one of the great vacation rental homes and then tour the different islands.
